What are soccer shoes made of?
The type of material being used in soccer shoes, depend on the type of soccer you play. Indoor soccer shoes differ from outdoor shoes for different reasons.
Most of the shoes coming down the production line nowadays, are using synthetic fiber. Compared to leather it’s a much lighter fabric, which is important for speed and acceleration. The fiber is much more water resistant and does not absorb too much water and moist.
The Balance Men’s Tekela V1 Soccer Shoe, for example, is made in synthetic fiber for the most part. Only the top of the shoe, around the ankle, is made in textile because of comfort reasons.
Since the introduction of the synthetic fabric, the variety in designs have increased enormously. It is used in combination with other types of material to achieve unique types of shoes. In the old days all soccer shoes were brown and black, now they have all types of colors.
Adidas even uses premium synthetic snakeskin in their Adizero 5-Star 6.0 Gold Cleat
Nowadays, leather is not the only material being used by the manufacturers anymore. New technologies have made it possible to create lighter shoes with more color and design.
The main drawback of 100% leather shoes is the fact they absorb a lot of water. In the early days of soccer, the players were shoes that weighed more than a pound each and the weight doubled when they got wet. Therefor manufacturers use leather for indoor soccer shoes or for playing on turf. When brands design new leather soccer shoes for outside, they tend to use some type of coat to protect the shoes or they use a synthetic type of leather.
The adidas Performance Mundial Team Turf Soccer Cleat is made for 100% in leather except for the sole.
Leather tends to fit your feet better, because it’s a much thicker material than the synthetic fabric. That’s why most casual shoes are made in leather, because you can wear them for a longer time, without having any pain in your feet. Shoes for playing sports are not made to wear more than a 2 hour period.
Most of the indoor and turf soccer shoes have a rubber sole, for maximum grip and comfort. In an earlier article we talked about the fact you should not wear indoor soccer shoes after you have used them outside. When the rubber get slippery, it’s very dangerous for injuries.
The studs of the shoes are made from rubber or some type of plastic. Decades ago, all shoes had metal studs. Not only were they much more dangerous for opposing players, they were also very hard for your feet when playing on a dry pitch.
The Nike Superfly X Academy Men’s Indoor Soccer Shoes has little rubber studs on the bottom of the shoe and non-marking rubber outsole of them, to provide traction on indoor/court surfaces.
Textile is used to add comfort to the shoes. Since the last few years, socks connected to the shoe have become a trend. Sometimes it’s used for comfort, other times it’s to protect the ankles from flipping over.
The adidas Predator Tango 18+ Indoor Shoe has a Stretchy Sockfit because it does not have any laces it has to be much tighter to the feet.
